Each semester, Georgia Tech students have the opportunity to spend Institute breaks making a difference through the Alternative Service Break (ASB) program, hosted by Civic Engagement within the Center for Student Engagement. Designed as an immersive, service-focused experience, ASB trips connect students with communities in need while encouraging civic responsibility, leadership development, and personal reflection. This spring, a group of eight students and a staff advisor traveled to New York City, where they engaged in hands-on service and meaningful conversations around complex social justice issues.

From day one, students hit the ground running—partnering with local nonprofits dedicated to housing justice, food insecurity, and youth advocacy. They sorted food donations, organized resources, and volunteered at youth centers, gaining firsthand insight into the systems that impact people’s daily lives. But the service didn’t stop there. Each evening, the group gathered for guided reflections, sharing takeaways and discussing how their experiences connected to larger societal challenges.

Outside of their service work, the students explored the rich cultural landscape of New York City—visiting historic neighborhoods, trying local food, and taking in the energy of a city shaped by resilience and activism.

“I returned from the trip with two significant takeaways: first, feeling fulfilled through the activities we participated in to support those in need outside of Georgia. Sometimes, we get so busy doing things in our own communities that we forget there are others in need as well,” reflected staff advisor Jalen Smith. “Second, I was in awe of this group’s dedication and devotion to give back during a time where they had free reign to relax, take a vacation, or just do whatever college students choose to do during their scheduled spring break! Instead, they opted to utilize that time to selflessly help others.”

The ASB program continues to empower students to lead with empathy, act with intention, and build stronger communities—on and beyond Georgia Tech’s campus.
